The Runaway Dog

Once upon a time, there lived a dog named Jake. He was rather big, but he always considered himself a lapdog. He lived with the Grants. They were a very odd family, but Jake loved them. They made him feel safe.

But sometimes it would rain and thunder, and he would call for his family, but they didn’t answer so he would run. He would run as fast and as hard as he could. And the thunder would rumble, and he would run faster, and the lighting would flash. He would run even faster away from home. You see dear reader, what Jake didn’t realize was that there were warm towels and blankets at home where his family was. But he ran because they didn’t answer when he called. And he ran until he couldn’t run any farther.

Then he heard a familiar voice. “Jake,” it called, and he found that he could run some more and he ran to the voice. When he rounded the bend he saw the old beat-up Prius that he had barked at so many times. And his family was there. They took him in, mud and all, and they drove home. They weren’t angry at him, they were just glad he had come back. We are a lot like Jake; we call out when times are hard, but if he doesn’t answer right away, we run, and we wonder where God is. So, God comes looking for us, and when he finds us, all we have to do is go with him, mud and all. Now you may be wondering what happened to Jake, well he lived happily ever after. Until the next thunderstorm.

Based on a true story that has happened way too many times
